Commodities List

Chrome
Chromite, is an oxide mineral composed of chromium, iron, and oxygen (FeCr2O4). It dark grey to black in colour with a metallic and submetallic luster and a high specific gravity. Chromite is commonly found in large mafic igneous intrusions such as the Bushveld in South Africa, amongst many other deposits. Chromite is used as a refractory material due to its high heat stability. The chromium extracted from chromite is utilised in chrome plating, alloying for production of corrosion resistant superalloys and stainless steel. It is further used as a pigment for glass, glazes, paint and as an oxidising agent for tanning leather.
Coal
Coal is a combustible organic sedimentary rock that forms from the accumulation and preservation of plant materials, usually in a swamp environment. Coal is composed of mainly carbon and hydrocarbons which contain energy that can be released through combustion. There are several types of coal, including anthracite, bituminous, sub-bituminous and lignite. Coal is primarily used for the generation of electricity as well as source of heat for manufacturing processes, and in the production of coke for metallurgical processes.
Manganese
Manganese is a silvery white, hard, brittle metal of group 7 of the periodic table. Manganese is a transition element that is widely distributed in the Earth’s crust. Manganese serves as a multifaceted component with a range of industrial uses, particularly stainless steels, glass making and ceramics. Manganese is further an essential to plant growth as well fulfilling human dietary requirements. South Africa is the world’s largest producer of Manganese contributing with 7.2 million MT. Other deposits are distributed throughout Australia, China, Brazil, India, Malaysia and Gabon.
Copper
Copper is a chemical element with symbol ‘Cu’ (from Latin: cuprum) and atomic number 29. It is a reddish-orange metal with a reddish-metallic luster. Further, it is a soft malleable, and ductile metal with very high thermal and electrical conductivity. Copper is used as a conductor of heat and electricity, as well as building material, and as a constituent of various metal alloys, such sterling silver used in jewellery, cupronickel used to make marine hardware and coins, constantan used in strain gauges and thermocouples for temperature measurements, amongst many other uses.
Cobalt

Cobalt is a hard brittle metal. Cobalt form many useful alloys. It is alloyed with iron, nickel, and other metals to form Alnico, an alloy with exceptional magnetic strength.

Cobalt may be further alloyed with chromium and tungsten to form Stellite which can be used for high-temperature, high-speed cutting tools and dies. The uses of Cobalt continue for magnet steels and stainless steel. It is also essential for nutrition in many animals.

Platinum Group Metals (PGM)

Platinum Group Metals are six transitional metal elements that are chemically, physically and anatomically similar. They are the densest known metal elements. The six PGMs are namely: Iridium (Ir), Osmium (Os), Palladium (Pd), Platinum (Pt), Rhodium (Rh), and Ruthenium (Ru).

Properties of PGM

  • They are highly durable, and due to their high value, often recycled, giving them long life cycles.

PMGs are mostly used as catalysts because of their chemical stability. These include:

  • catalysts for petroleum industry (palladium and platinum),
  • pacemakers and other medical implants (iridium and platinum)
  • as a stain for fingerprints and DNA (osmium)
  • In the production of nitric acid (rhodium)
  • In chemicals such as cleaning liquids, adhesives, and paints (ruthenium).
